  • 1905 – White Sox pitcher Frank Smith no-hits the Tigers

  • 1920 – Jack Dempsey knocks out Billy Miske in the 3rd round in a heavyweight title fight. It’s the first fight to be broadcast on the radio

  • 1924 – St. Louis Browns pitcher Urban Shocker pitches two complete games against the White Sox in a double-header. The Browns win both games 6-2

  • 1945 – Athletics catcher Charlie George punches umpire Joe Rue in the face after being called out on strikes

  • 1945 – Bishop Noll plays in their first football game under that name, falling to FW Central Catholic 15-12. From 1942-1945, they were known as Hammond Central Catholic

  • 1953 – Roy Campanella sets the single-season home run record for a catcher with 38

  • 1963 – The 100,000th game in MLB history is played

  • 1972 – The Summer Olympics resume in Munich following the terrorist attack that killed 11 Israeli athletes

  • 1976 – Steve Yeager of the Dodgers is seriously injured after a shard of teammate Bill Russell’s bat hits him in the throat while in the on-deck circle

  • 1989 – The Pittsburgh Steelers are banned from practicing at their own field at Three Rivers Stadium because the Rolling Stones are rehearsing for an upcoming concert

  • 1995 – Cal Ripken Jr. breaks Lou Gehrig’s consecutive game streak by playing in his 2,131st straight game for the Orioles

  • 1996 – Eddie Murray hits his 500th career homer, becoming only the third player in MLB history (along with Willie Mays & Hank Aaron) to have 500 homers and 3,000 hits

  • 1996 – Valpo defeats Hobart 13-10 in overtime. It’s the only regular season loss for the Brickies – they’d go to be the Class 4A runner-up.

  • 2000 – Scott Sheldon of the Rangers becomes the third player in MLB history to play all nine positions in one game during a 13-1 loss to the White Sox

  • 2001 – Barry Bonds becomes the fifth player in MLB history to hit 60 home runs in a season

  • 2006 – Marlins rookie Anibal Sanchez throws a no-hitter against the Diamondbacks
