1925 – Red Grange makes his NFL debut with the Chicago Bears, but his held to just 36 yards in a scoreless tie against the Chicago Cardinals.
1934 – After starting their inaugural season 10-0, the Detroit Lions suffer their first defeat, losing to the Packers 3-0. It’s the first of many, many losses for the franchise.
1940 – The University of Michigan retires Gary native Tom Harmon’s #98. Harmon was a two time All-American, three time First Team All Big Ten, and a Heisman Trophy winner for the Wolverines.
1948 – Howie Dallmar of the Philadelphia Warriors matches his own record for poor shooting, missing all 15 of his attempts in a game against the Capitals.
1951 – The Cleveland Browns set an NFL record for penalty yards as they are flagged for 209 yards in a game against Bears.
1952 – The Dallas Texans win their only game in the first, and only, season in the NFL, beating the Bears 27-23. The team would fold after the season.
1961 – Bob Cousy becomes the second player in NBA history to score 15,000 career points.
1979 – The legendary football broadcast duo of Pat Summerall and John Madden call a game together for the first time. It’s a partnership that would last for 22 years.
1980 – Famously saying “No mas, No mas”, Roberto Duran quits in the eighth round in a bout against Sugar Ray Leonard, allowing Leonard to regain the WBC welterweight title.
1981 – Milwaukee’s Rollie Fingers becomes the first relief pitcher to win the AL MVP. Fingers saved 28 games with an ERA of 1.04.
1985 – White Sox shortstop Ozzie Guillen is named AL Rookie of the Year.
1989 – The Hobart Brickies win the second football state championship in program history, beating Franklin Central 17-7, capping off a 13-1 campaign that saw them lose the opening game to Lew Wallace and then run the table.
2007 – San Diego Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson becomes the 23rd player in NFL history to rush for 10,000 career yards.
2012 – The Toronto Argonauts beat the Calgary Stampeders 35-22 to win the 100th Canadian Football League Grey Cup.
2018 – Chargers QB Philip Rivers sets an NFL record by completing 25 consecutive passes in a single game.
2019 – Ravens QB, Lamar Jackson, becomes the first QB in league history to throw for 3,000 yards and run for 1,500 in his first two seasons.
