1937 – The Hammond High Wildcats finish the football season with an undefeated record and as AP state champs.

1940 – University of Michigan running back, and Gary native, Tom Harmon wins the Heisman Trophy.

1956 – Notre Dame’s Paul Hornung is the first overall pick in the NFL Draft, going to the Green Bay Packers.

1960 – Gordie Howe becomes the first player in NHL history to record 1,000 career points.

1961 – A year after getting his 1,000th point, Gordie Howe becomes the first player in NHL history to play in 1,000 career games.

1966 – The Washington Redskins beat the New York Giants 72-41 in the highest scoring game in NFL history.

1993 – The Hobart Brickies win the fourth football state championship in program history, beating East Central 31-18.

1993 – The Lake Central Indians fall in the football state championship, losing to Bloomington South 33-27.

2004 – The Andrean 59ers win the first football state title in program history, beating Heritage Hills 21-14.

2013 – Tiger Woods is named the PGA Tour Player of the Year for the 11th time in his career.
