1966 – The Boston Celtics win their eight straight NBA championship, defeating the Lakers 95-93 in game seven of their series.

1985 – Billy Martin is hired as manager of the New York Yankees for the fourth time.

1987 – The Tampa Bay Buccaneers select University of Miami quarterback Vinny Testarved with the #1 overall pick in the NFL Draft.

1992 – For the first time in NHL history, video replay decides the result of a playoff game. In overtime, Sergei Fedorov of the Red Wings appears to hit the crossbar behind Minnesota goalie Jon Casey. After the Stars ice the puck, the referees review the shot and it shows that the puck crossed the goal line and bounces off the frame at the back of the net, giving Detroit a 1-0 victory.

1993 – A plane crash in Gabon kills 30 soccer players.

1995 – Michael Jordan scores 48 points in a win over the Hornets in his first playoff game since his return from retirement.

2001 – Colorado Avalanche goalie Patrick Roy sets an NHL record by recording his 16th career playoff shutout.

2003 – Andre Agassi becomes the oldest player to be ranked #1 in the ATP tennis rankings at 33 years and 13 days old.

2007- The Oakland Raiders draft LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russel with the first pick in the NFL Draft. It doesn’t go well.

2011 – Auburn quarterback Cam Newton is taken #1 overall by the Carolina Panthers.

2018 – For the seventh time in the modern era of the NFL Draft (since 1967) quarterbacks are selected with the first two picks with the Rams taking Cal QB Jared Goff first and the Eagles drafting North Dakota State’s Carson Wentz second.
