1905 – In a victory over the Pirates, Cubs outfield Jack McCarthy becomes the only outfielder in MLB history to throw out three runners at the plate, with each of the runners being the second out in a double play, in a single game.

1912 – Hugh Bradley of the Red Sox hits the first home run at Fenway Park.

1931 – Lou Gehrig hits a home run, but is called out for passing a runner on the base paths. The mistake costs him the home run title as he and Babe Ruth end the season tied for the league lead.

1941 – Wrigley Field debuts the first organ at a Major League Baseball stadium.

1950 – The University of Miami ends the longest winning streak in college tennis, handing William & Mary their first loss in 82 meets, a span lasting five years.

1961 – Roger Maris hits his first home run of the season. He would go on to hit a record 61 of them during the year.

1964 – The Boston Celtics win their sixth straight NBA championship, defeating the San Francisco Warriors in game five of the NBA Finals.

1966 – Legendary Celtics coach Red Auerbach announces his retirement.

1982 – Gene Michael is hired as manager of the New York Yankees for the second time.

1983 – John Elway is selected with the first overall pick by the Baltimore Colts. Elway had previously said we would play baseball instead of playing for the Colts, and he is eventually traded to the Broncos.

1990 – Nolan Ryan ties Bob Feller’s record by pitching his 12th career one-hitter.

1992 – The Indianapolis Colts select University of Washington defensive end Steve Emtman with the first overall pick in the NFL Draft.

2003 – The Cincinnati Bengals draft USC quarterback Carson Palmer #1 overall.

2008 – The Dolphins take Michigan offensive tackle Jake Long with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

2012 – The Indianapolis Colts select Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck with the #1 overall pick in the NFL Draft.

2018 – For the first time in NFL Draft history, four quarterbacks are taken in the top ten with Baker Mayfield going first to the Browns, Sam Darnold to the Jets at #3, Josh Allen to the Bills with the eighth pick and Josh Rosen to Arizona at #10.
