BASEBALL: RSN Top 10 – 5/17/21

#10 Hobart Brickies

15-9; Last Week: #7

The ups and downs of the Hobart season continued last week, where they went 2-2 with wins over KV and Wheeler but losses to the Kougars and Crown Point. The Brickies gave up double-digit runs in three out of those four games – not a recipe for post-season success, especially when you have to take on Andrean in the first round. There ins’t much time to turn things around, so it has to start this week with Kouts, LC, and Morton on the schedule.

#9 Washington Twp. Senators

17-6; Last Week: NR

The Senators are back in the rankings after throwing not one, not two, but five shutouts last week, where they went 6-0 overall. They also scored 55 runs during that same stretch, not needless to say they were on fire both offensively and on the hill. This week, the big PCC Tournament, where a title, and bragging rights, are on the line!

#8 LaPorte Slicers

18-6; Last Week: #9

LaPorte moves up one spot to #8 this week after going 5-0 a week ago, including a sweep of LaPorte County rival Michigan City in their two game series. With a seven game winning streak on their side, the Slicers have a good shot of taking that to double digits with three winnable games on the docket for this week. With a wide open Sectional #3, don’t be surprised to see the Slicers playing at the Regional on their own field.

#7 Munster Mustangs

16-8; Last Week: #8

Talk about ending the week on a high note. Munster pitcher Brady Ginaven put the cherry on top of a 4-0 sundae by throwing a no-hitter against Griffith, while also striking out 12 hitters. Oh yeah, and he also went 3-4 with a pair of RBI. We’ll see if the ‘Stangs can continue to ride that wave with a tough week ahead, featuring games against Illiana Christian, Hanover Central, and Hebron.

#6 Valparaiso Vikings

14-6-1; Last Week: #6

The Vikings hold on to their #6 ranking after going 3-1 last week, with their lone loss come to Mooresville by a 1-0 final. Valpo has won eight of their last nine was they look to fill the dark horse role in the Class 4A Sectional #2 field. Andrean, Crown Point, and Hobart are all in the same sectional, but don’t be surprised if the Vikings are one of the last teams standing.

#5 Highland Trojans

19-5; Last Week: #4

It wasn’t the way Highland wanted to start things off last week, dropping both of their games against Andrean, but they closed out the week on a strong note, defeating Hebron and Chesterton to salvage a 2-2 mark and only causing a one spot drop. The Trojans have another busy week ahead, with Merrillville, Bishop Noll, Valpo and Portage on the schedule. Another 2-2 week though, would lead to an even bigger drop in the poll.

#4 Crown Point Bulldogs

17-6; Last Week: #5

Moving up a spot this week, Crown Point went 3-0 during last week’s schedule, including a sweep of DAC foe Portage. The Bulldogs are 7-1 since the start of May, with their only loss coming to top ranked Andrean. A pretty tough schedule remains for the rest of the regular season, so keeping that record clean will be a pretty tough order, but this squad just finds ways to win and we won’t be shocked if they continue to do so.

#3 Lake Central Indians

18-6; Last Week: #3

The bats came alive for the Tribe during their 5-0 week, putting up a combined 54 runs in their four outings, including a 21 spot against DAC rival Chesterton. We’ll see if the Indians can take that offensive output into the final full week of the regular season, but with three winnable games on the docket, look for LC to be on a roll come tournament time.

#2 Hanover Central Wildcats

19-3-1; Last Week: #2

Not letting a two game losing streak carry over, the Wildcats went 3-0 during last week’s action, picking up a pair of wins over Lake Station (one via forfeit) and a 6-1 victory against previously ranked Illiana Christian. We could be seeing a Regional preview this week, with Hanover taking on Griffith for back to back games before hosting Munster on Friday.

#1 Andrean 59ers

22-3; Last Week: #1

The Niners hold on to the top spot in the RSN Top 10 after a week that saw them go 4-0 while surrendering a grand total of three runs, with all three coming in last Monday’s 7-3 win over Highland. With a conference title to add to the trophy case, the Niners set their sights on bigger prizes and this week’s schedule featuring De La Salle, St. Rita, & Marian Catholic, will help get them ready for the tournament.
