1915 – Babe Ruth makes his debut as a pitcher and also hits his first career home run in a 4-3 15 inning Red Sox loss to the Yankees.

1921 – The American Soccer League is formed.

1954 – UK runner Roger Bannister becomes the first person to run a mile in under four minutes, finishing in 3:59:4.

1982 – Seattle Mariners pitcher Gaylord Perry becomes the 15th pitcher in MLB history to win 300 career games.

1987 – Mario Andretti sets a one lap speed record at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway at 218.204 miles per hour.

1988 – New Jersey Devils coach Jim Schoenfeld is suspended after telling referee Don Koharski to “eat another donut, you fat pig”.

1997 – The Hartford Whalers officially move to North Carolina and become the Carolina Hurricanes.

1997 – The Boston Celtics name Rick Pitino as their new head coach.

1998 – Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood ties an MLB record by striking out 20 hitters in a game, shutting down the Astros. Wood only gave up one hit and didn’t issue any walks. It was just his fifth career start.

2000 – Fusaichi Pegasus is the first favorite to win the Kentucky Derby since 1979.

2016 – Major League Baseball announced that the Pirates-Marlins series which was to take place in Puerto Rico would be moved to Miami due to concerns about the Zika virus.

2019 – Pablo Sandoval of the San Francisco Giants becomes just the second player since 1900 to hit a home run, steal a base, and pitch a scoreless outing in a single game. Sandoval, normally a third baseman, came in to pitch the eighth inning of a 12-4 loss to the Reds. He threw a 10 pitch shutout inning. His stolen base in the game was his first since 2012.
