DID YOU KNOW – Sectional Championship Edition

CROWN POINT @ MERRILLVILLE

Did You Know – This will be the fifth year out of the last six that Crown Point & Merrillville have met in the post-season. The Pirates have won three out of those last four playoff meetings.

Did You Know – Merrillville has not lost a sectional game at home since 2011, when they were defeated by Crown Point.

PENN @ LAPORTE

Did You Know – That every time in program history that LaPorte has won a sectional title, they’ve also advanced to semi-state

Did You Know – A Slicer victory over Penn would give them 10 wins on the season, tying them with the 2006 team for the most in school history

Did You Know – If Penn wins, they’ll have won four straight sectional championships which is not even close to the longest streak in school history. The Kingsmen won 11 straight sectional titles from 1995-2005

MICHIGAN CITY @ MISHAWAKA

Did You Know – This is the first year that Michigan City has advanced past their first game of the post-season since 2005.

Did You Know – This is the second time that the Wolves & Cavemen have met in the post-season. Mishawka took home a 34-15 in the 2000 Sectional #2 semi-finals.

Did You Know – Michigan City has made only one other appearance in a sectional championship game – back in 1995, their first year of football as a consolidated school. The Wolves fell to Penn 13-7.

LOWELL @ MUNSTER

Did You Know – Munster’s last sectional title came in 1996. Since then, this is only the 2nd time they’ve played a game in the month of November. 2013 was the other season.

Did You Know – Lowell’s last playoff loss at Munster came in the sectional opener in 1995 when the Mustang defense held the Red Devil offense, which averaged over 31 points a game, to just 3 points.

HOBART @ NEW PRAIRIE

Did You Know – This is the first EVER meeting between Hobart & New Prairie

Did You Know – Prior to the start of this season, Hobart has a 100-99 record (including the post-season) since their last sectional title in 1997.

Did You Know – A Brickie win would give them just their second double-digit win season since 1997.

Did You Know – That New Prairie only has four sectional titles in program history, which began in 1968. Two of those titles have come under head coach Russ Radtke.

MISHAWAKA MARIAN @ GRIFFITH

Did You Know – That while this is the first post-season season meeting between these two schools, Griffith and Mishawaka played a two year regular season matchup in 2001 & 2002, with the Panthers winning both games.

Did You Know – Ben Geffert is the 13th head coach in Griffith football history. With a win over Mishawaka Marian, he would join just Les Thornton & Russ Radtke as the only ones to win post-season titles.

Did You Know – The last time Griffith lost a sectional championship game at home was the 2004 thriller against Andrean.

Did You Know – Mishawaka Marian has only five sectional titles in program history, which began in 1966. They have never won sectional titles in back to back seasons – they were the sectional champs last year.

WHITING @ KNOX

Did You Know – This will be Whiting’s first trip to play at Knox. Their only other meeting was in last year’s sectional championship which took place in Whiting.

Did You Know – Since 2012, and including this season, the Oilers have not lost more than two games in a single year.

Did You Know – With a win, Whiting will capture their fifth sectional title in program history. The other nine schools that make up the Greater South Shore Conference have a combined 10 sectional titles, with no school having more than two.

Did You Know – Knox has been playing football since 1949. They’ve never won a sectional title.

PIONEER @ NORTH JUDSON

Did You Know – This is the second straight season that these two teams have met in both the regular season and the sectional championship. Pioneer has won the previous three meetings by a combined 160-18.
