THIS DAY IN SPORTS HISTORY: 9/13

1883 – One armed pitcher Hugh Daily of Cleveland throws a no-hitter against Philadelphia.

1902 – The famous Cubs trio of Joe Tinker, Johnny Evers and Frank Chance appear together for the first time.

1909 – Ty Cobb clinches the AL home run title by hitting his ninth home run of the season. All of them were inside the park homers.

1936 – 17 year old Cleveland Indians pitcher Bob Feller sets a record by recording 17 strikeouts in a game.

1942 – Cubs shortstop, Leonard Merullo, coughs up four errors in a single inning. 

1965 – Willie Mays hits his 500th career home run.

1971 – Frank Robinson hits his 500th career home run. 

1981 – The Atlanta Falcons tie an NFL record by scoring 31 points in a single quarter.

1983 – Rickey Henderson, then with the A’s, records 100 steals in a season for the third straight year.

1991 – Joe Carter becomes the first player in baseball history to record 100 plus RBI in three consecutive season with three different teams.

1997 – The Carolina Hurricanes play their first exhibition game, defeating the New York Islanders, 4-1. 

1999 – The Denver Broncos retire John Elway’s jersey.

2010 – Rafael Nadal defeats Novak Djokovic in the U.S. Open Men’s Final, becoming the first Spaniard to win the tournament since 1975.

2018 – The first all-female broadcast booth in NFL history for a Thursday Night Football game between Cincinnati and Baltimore.

2020 – Cubs pitcher Alec Mills throws a no-hitter against the Milwaukee Brewers.
