1916 – Christy Mathewson, then pitching for the Reds, picks up career victory #373. It is the only win in his 17 year career that was not with the New York Giants.

1954 – Willie Mays sets an MLB record with his 82nd extra base hit of the season.

1968 – Tigers pitcher Denny McLain picks up his 30th victory of the season. He’s the first pitcher since Cy Young in 1934 to win 30 games.

1986 – Bob Brenley of the San Francisco Giants ties an MLB record by committing four errors in one inning.

1986 – Walter Payton rushes for 177 yards against the Eagles, passing the 15,000 yard mark for his career. In the game, he also scores his 100th career touchdown.

1989 – The Calgary Flames become the first team to play a game in the Soviet Union, win 4-2. 

1990 – Ken Griffey Jr. and Ken Griffey Sr. hit back to back home runs for the Seattle Mariners in a game against the Angels.

1991 – San Diego State freshman running back Marshall Faulk sets an NCAA record by rushing for 386 yards to go along with seven touchdowns in a 55-34 win over Pacific.

1994 – With the players on strike, MLB owners vote to cancel the remainder of the season along with the World Series.

1996 – Oakland A’s slugger Mark McGwire becomes the 13th player in MLB history to hit 50 homers in a season.

2003 – Baltimore Ravens running back Jamaal Lewis sets an NFL record by rushing for 295 yards in a win over the Browns.

2003 – New York Jets quarterback Vinny Testaverde becomes the ninth player in NFL history to pass for 40,000 yards in a career.

2014 – Patriots coach Bill Belichick becomes the sixth head coach in NFL history to win 200 regular season games in a career.
