1885 – Boxing has its first Heavyweight Title fight in a bout between John L. Sullivan and Dominick McCaffrey.

1925 – Babe Ruth is suspended and fined $5,000 after showing up late to batting practice.

1950 – The International Olympic Committee votes to admit West Germany and Japan back into the Olympic Games beginning in 1952. 

1965 – Willie Mays hits his 17th homerun in the month of August, setting a National League record at the time.

1977 – St. Louis Cardinals speedster Lou Brock passes Ty Cobb for the most stolen bases of all-time with his 894th career steal.

1982 – George Brett records hit 1,500th career hit.

1985 – Don Baylor of the Yankees is hit by a pitch for a record 190th career time.

2004 – The Olympic Games come to a close in Athens, Greece.

2009 – Cristiano Ronaldo makes his long-awaited debut for Real Madrid, slotting a penalty in a 3-2 win. 

2012 – Lance Armstrong is stripped of all of his seven Tour de France titles. 

2018 – Aaron Rodgers signs a record contract extension with the Green Bay Packers for four years and $103 million in guarantees.

2022 – Albert Pujols hits his 694th career homer, off of the 450th different pitcher.
