1911 – White Sox pitcher Ed Walsh throws a no-hitter against the Boston Red Sox.

1918 – Reds manager Christy Mathewson resigns his position in order to accept a commission as a captain in the chemical warfare branch of the Army.

1921 – The Acme Packing Company in Green Bay, Wisconsin is granted an NFL franchise.

1922 – Paavo Nurmi runs the 3000m in world record time, 8 minutes and 28 seconds. 

1938 – Yankees slugger Joe DiMaggio hits three triples, while pitcher Monte Pearson no-hits the Cleveland Indians in a 13-0 win. 

1982 – Rickey Henderson sets an MLB record by stealing his 119th base of the season.

1988 – Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda picks up career victory #1,000 as LA beats the Phillies 4-2.

1990 – The start of a game between the Brewers and Blue Jays is delayed 35 minutes due to gnats.

1995 – Tiger Woods wins the 95th U.S. Golf Amateur Championship. 

2004 – The US men’s basketball team is upset by Argentina 89-81 in the semi-finals. Argentina would go on to win the gold while the US would take bronze.

2017 – Floyd Mayweather defeats Conor McGregor in a boxing exhibition match in Las Vegas.
