1976 – The White Sox debut uniforms which feature the players wearing shorts. They don’t last long.
1984 – Carl Lewis wins his third gold medal at the Los Angeles Olympics, winning the 200-meter dash.
1985 – Major League Baseball announces that two new franchises will join the National League in 1993. Those teams would become the Rockies and Marlins.
1988 – Night baseball is played at Wrigley Field for the first time. But the game between the Cubs and Phillies is called in the bottom of the fourth due to rain, making it not an official game.
1990 – Carlton Fisk ties Johnny Bench’s record for most home runs by a catcher after hitting his 327th homer.
1992 – “The Dream Team” wins the gold medal at the Barcelona Olympics, defeating Croatia 117-85 in the championship game.
1997 – Randy Johnson falls just short of tying the record for strikeouts in a game by fanning 19 White Sox.
2008 – The Beijing Olympics open.
2021 – The USA women’s basketball team win their 7th consecutive Olympic gold medal with a 90-75 win over Japan
