1907 – Walter Johnson gets his first of what would be 416 career pitching wins.

1960 – Arnold Palmer gets his 20th PGA Tour victory at the Insurance City Open.

1972 – Yogi Berra, Sandy Koufax, Early Wynn, Josh Gibson, and others are inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. 

1992 – LSU Center Shaquille O’Neal is selected first overall by the Orlando Magic. 

1999 – Wade Boggs, then with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, hits a home run for career hit #3,000.

2004 – Greg Maddux, back with the Cubs, picks up career win #300.

2007 – Barry Bonds hits career home run #756, breaking Hank Aaron’s record for the most in baseball history.

2010 – Jerry Rice, Emmitt Smith, John Randle, and others are inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. 

2016 – Ichiro Suzuki, then playing for the Marlins, becomes the 30th player in MLB history to reach 3,000 career hits.

2016 – American swimmer Katie Ledecky sets a world record in the 400 meter freestyle, winning the gold at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in a time of 3:56.46.

2016 – Michael Phelps, as a member of the 4×100 meter relay team, wins an Olympic record 19th gold medal.

2016 – Manny Machado of the Orioles becomes the first player in MLB history to hit a home run in the first, second, and third innings, driving in seven runs in a rout of the White Sox.

2021 – The US Men’s basketball team wins their 4th consecutive Olympic gold medal with an 87-82 win over France.
