1918 – Reds manager Christy Mathewson suspends player Hal Chase on suspicion of fixing games.

1925 – Babe Ruth is subbed out of a game for a pinch hitter for the first, and only time in his career. Bobby Veach, who hit for Ruth, flew out.

1936 – Jesse Owens is part of the US 4×100 meter relay team that set a world record at the Berlin Olympics. It is Owens’ fourth gold of the games.

1946 – For the first time in MLB history, all games in the league (eight of them) are played at night.

1971 – Satchel Paige is inducted into baseball’s Hall of Fame.

1975 – The Houston Oilers beat the New Orleans Saints 13-7 in an exhibition game. It is the first football game played at the New Orleans Superdome.

1975 – Davey Lopes of the Dodgers sets an MLB record by stealing 32 consecutive bases without being caught.

1988 – In the first official night game at Wrigley Field, the Cubs beat the Mets 6-4.

1988 – The Edmonton Oilers trade “The Great One” Wayne Gretzky to the Los Angeles Kings for three first-round draft picks, two players, and cash.

2002 – Barry Bonds hits his 600th career home run.

2012 – Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt wins the 200 meters at the London Olympics, making him the first sprinter to win both the 100 and 200 in back-to-back Olympics.

2012 – The US women’s soccer team beats Japan 2-1 to win the gold medal.

2016 – Michael Phelps wins the 20th gold medal of his career, winning the 200-meter butterfly.

2022 – Tennis legend Serena Williams announces her future retirement in a “Vogue” interview.
