1936 – Jesse Owens continues to dominate the Berlin Olympics, winning his third gold medal, this time in the 200-meter dash.

1972 – Detroit Tigers shortstop Ed Brinkman commits an error after a record-long errorless streak of 72 games and 331 chances.

1979 – Then Philadelphia Phiillie, Pete Rose, hits his NL record 2,427th single. 

1984 – Toronto DH Cliff Johnson sets an MLB record by hitting his 19th career pinch-hit home run.

1986 – Giants pitcher Steve Carlton becomes the second pitcher in MLB history to record 4,000 career strikeouts.

1992 – Cuba wins the first-ever gold medal in baseball at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona.

1999 – Cardinals slugger Mark McGwire becomes the 16th player in MLB history to record 500 career home runs.

2005 – Albert Pujols becomes the first player in MLB history to record 30 or more home runs in each of his first five seasons.

2006 – Warren Moon, Troy Aikman, John Madden, and Reggie White are inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

2007 – Atlanta pitcher Tom Glavine becomes the 23rd pitcher in MLB history to win 300 games.

2013 – MLB suspends Alex Rodriguez for 211 games as part of the Biogenesis PED scandal.

2016 – The Summer Olympics open in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
