1920 – Cleveland shortstop Ray Chapman is hit in the head by a pitch from Yankees pitcher Carl Mays. Chapman dies the next day from his injuries.

1927 – Babe Ruth hits the first homerun out of Comiskey Park, as the Yankees would beat the White Sox, 8-1. 

1936 – The Berlin Olympics come to a close.

1965 – The AFL awards a franchise to Miami and the Dolphins are formed.

1998 – With a win in the Pepsi 400, Jeff Gordon becomes the seventh driver in NASCAR history to win four consecutive races.

2003 – An 18-year old Cristiano Ronaldo makes his debut for Manchester United in 4-0 win over Bolton Wanderers. 

2008 – Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt sets a world record in the 100 meter dash with a time of 9.69 seconds to win the gold medal at the Beijing Olympics.

2008 – Michael Phelps ties Mark Spitz’s 1972 Olympic performance by winning his seventh gold medal at the Beijing Olympics.

2009 – Usain Bolt breaks the 100 meter world record he set a year prior, finishing the race in 9.58 seconds.

2022 – The Philadelphia Phillies become the 9th MLB team to 10,000 franchise wins.
