THIS DAY IN SPORTS HISTORY: 8/15

1939 – The first night game in Comiskey Park’s history ends in a White Sox 5-2 win over the Cleveland Browns. 

1964 – The Cubs honor Ernie Banks, as it was “Ernie Banks Day” at Wrigley Field. 

1965 – The San Francisco Giants hold a “Masanori Murakami Day” at Candlestick Park to honor the 1st Japanese player in the Majors. 

1990 – Then with the Oakland Athletics, Mark McGwire becomes the first batter to hit 30 Homeruns in each of his first four seasons.

1993 – Nolan Ryan, then with the Texas Rangers, wins his 324th and final game against the Cleveland Indians, 4-1. 

1997 – The Los Angeles Dodgers retire Tommy Lasorda’s number 2 jersey. 

1999 – Tiger Woods wins his second major at the PGA Championship. 

2005 – Phil Mickelson wins the PGA Championship by a stroke. 

2012 – Felix Hernandez becomes the 23rd pitcher in MLB history to throw a perfect game.
