Region Hoops History – March Madness Milestones

MARCH 16

  • 1974 – Pete Trgovich comes off the bench to collect one rebound and one assist in UCLA’s 83-60 win over San Francisco to advance to the Final Four.

  • 1989 – Kenny Lofton does a little bit of everything in Arizona’s 94-60 win over Robert Morris, scoring two points, pulling in four rebounds, dishing out two assists, collecting two steals and even blocking 1 shot.

  • 1991 – IU’s Matt Nover comes off the bench to score two points in a 82-60 Hoosiers win over Florida State in the second round.

  • 2000 – In a narrow 62-61 opening round win over Dayton, Purdue’s Carson Cunningham scores 10 points to go along with two rebounds, three assists & two steals.

  • 2007 – Luke Harangody makes his NCAA Tournament debut for Notre Dame, scoring four points and collecting one rebound in a 74-64 opening round loss to Winthrop.

  • 2012 – Robbie Hummel scores 10 points and adds seven rebounds and two steals in Purdue’s 72-69 opening round win over St. Mary’s.

  • 2012 – Playing in his first tournament game for Notre Dame after transferring from Purdue, Scott Martin totals 11 points, seven rebounds & three assists in a 67-63 Irish loss to Xavier.

  • 2012 – Zack Novak plays in his final collegiate game as Michigan falls to Ohio in the tournament opener, 65-60. Novak scores two2 points and has three rebounds in the loss.

  • 2017 – Spike Albrecht dishes out one assist in a 80-70 Purdue win over Vermont in the opening round of the tournament.

  • 2017 – “Big Cat” Tyler Wideman scores five points, hauls in seven rebounds and blocks two shots in Butler’s 76-64 opening round win over Winthrop.

MARCH 17

  • 1973 – Pete Trgovich scores two points in UCLA’s Regional Final win over San Francisco.

  • 1983 – Purdue’s Jim Bullock scores four points, hauls in six rebounds, has one steal and blocks one shot in a 55-53 opening round win over Robert Morris.

  • 1984 – Dan Dakich helps IU advance past Richmond in the second round by scoring seven points, collecting two rebounds and dishing out five assists.

  • 1994 – Glenn Robinson goes off for a double-double in Purdue’s 98-67 opening round win over Central Florida. “The Big Dog” finishes with 31 points, 11 rebounds, two assists and a steal.

  • 2016 – Tyler Wideman puts up his first double-digit scoring performance in the NCAA Tournament by totaling 14 points to go along with seven rebounds, one assist and one steal in Butler’s 71-61 opening round win over Texas Tech.

MARCH 18

  • 1976 – Rich Valavicius plays, but does not record any stats in IU’s 74-69 second round win over Alabama.

  • 1988 – Arizona’s Kenny Lofton helps the Wildcats rout Cornell 90-50 in the opening round with  a four point, two rebound, one assist and three steal performance.

  • 2000 – Carson Cunningham totals eight points, seven assists, two rebounds and two steals as Purdue defeats Oklahoma 66-62 in second round action.

  • 2005 – Shane Power scores 14 points to go along with six rebounds and three assists in Mississippi State’s 93-70 opening round win over Stanford.

  • 2010 – Luke Harangody scores four points and collects seven rounds in his final game at Notre Dame, a 51-50 opening round loss to Old Dominion.

  • 2011 – E’Twaun Moore opens up the tournament with a double-double in Purdue’s 65-43 win over St. Peter’s. The Boilermaker guard scores 16 points, collects 16 rebounds and also adds three assists and two blocks. 

  • 2011 – Notre Dame’s Scott Martin scores 11 points, hauls in six rebounds, dishes out four assists and has a steal in a 69-56 opening round win over Akron.

  • 2011 – Zack Novak tallies a double-double in Michigan’s 75-45 win over Tennessee in the opening round of the tournament. Novak totals 14 points to go along with 10 rebounds and two assists. 

  • 2012 – In his final collegiate game, Robbie Hummel scores 26 points and also has nine rebounds, three assists and a block in Purdue’s 63-60 second round loss to Kansas.

  • 2017 – Spike Albrecht dishes out one assist as Purdue defeats Iowa State 80-76 in the second round of the tournament.

  • 2017 – Tyler Wideman contributes four points, three rebounds and one assist in Butler’s 74-65 second round win over Middle Tennessee. 

MARCH 19

  • 1983 – Jim Bullock scores 12 points and has three rebounds for Purdue in a 78-68 second round loss to Arkansas.

  • 1992 – IU’s Matt Nover scores six points, collects eight rebounds and blocks a shot in a 94-55 opening round win over Eastern Illinois.

  • 1993 – Glenn Robinson makes his NCAA Tournament debut for Purdue, scoring 36 points to go along with seven rebounds, one assist, and one steal in a 74-68 opening round loss to Rhode Island.

  • 1993 – Matt Nover scores 17 points, totals five rebounds and adds a steal and block in IU’s 97-54 rout of Wright State in the opening round of the tournament.

  • 1994 – Purdue defeats Alabama in the second round, thanks in large part to Glenn Robinson’s 33 point and 11 rebound performance.

  • 1999 – Carson Cunningham scores six points and has one rebound and one assist in Purdue’s 77-55 regional semi-final loss to Temple.

  • 2004 – Playing in his first tournament game at Mississippi State after transferring from Iowa State, Shane Power scores 13 points and collects three rebounds in a 85-52 opening round win over Monmouth.

  • 2009 – E’Twaun Moore scores 17 points to go along with two rebounds, two assists and two steals as Purdue defeats Northern Iowa 61-56 in the opening round.

  • 2009 – Robbie Hummel falls just shy of a double-double in Purdue’s win over Northern Iowa, scoring nine points and collecting 10 rebounds. 

  • 2009 – Zack Novak makes his tournament debut for Michigan, scoring seven points and adding four rebounds and four assists as the Wolverines defeat Clemson 62-59 in the opening round.

  • 2010 – Purdue’s E’Twan Moore totals 12 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals in a 72-64 Boilermaker win over Siena to open the tournament.

  • 2015 – Tyler Wideman plays in his first NCAA Tournament game, coming off the bench to record one steal and one block and Butler defeats Texas 56-48 in the opening round.

  • 2016 – Butler falls to Virginia in the second round of the tournament, with Tyler Wideman scoring five points to go along with three rebounds, one assist and one block for the Bulldogs.

MARCH 20

  • 1975 – UCLA wins the regional semi-final with the help of Pete Trgovich, who scored 16 points to go along with three rebounds, three assists, one steal and one block.

  • 1975 – Louisville’s Junior Bridgeman scores 20 points, grabs eight rebounds and has four assists as the Cardinals defeat Cincinnati in the regional semi-final.

  • 1976 – Rich Valavicius scores one point and has two rebounds as IU advances to the Final Four with a 65-56 win over Marquette.

  • 1983 – Dan Dakich comes off the bench to grab one rebound in IU’s 63-49 second round win over Oklahoma.

  • 1988 – Arizona’s Kenny Lofton scores four points, has one rebound and one steal as the Wildcats defeat Seton Hall 84-55 in the second round.

  • 1998 – Playing in his final game at Valpo, Bryce Drew scores 18 points, collects three rebounds, dishes out three assists and has three steals, but the Crusaders fall to Rhode Island 74-68 in the Sweet 16. 

  • 2005 – Shane Power scores three points, grabs five boards, has one assist and two steals in his final collegiate game as Mississippi State loses to Duke in the second round 63-55.

  • 2008 – Luke Harangody records a double-double for Notre Dame, scoring 18 points and grabbing 14 rebounds as the Irish beat George Mason 68-50 in the opening round.

  • 2008 – Three Region players contributed to Purdue’s 90-79 opening round win over Baylor as E’Twaun Moore scores 16 points, hauls in eight rebounds and dishes out four assists, Robbie Hummel scores nine and collects four rebounds, while Scott Martin scores nine points, grabs five rebounds, totals two assists and blocks two shots.

  • 2011 – In his final game as a Boilermaker, E’Twaun Moore scores 10 points, grabs eight rebounds, totals six assists, has one steal and blocks a shot in a 94-76 second round loss to VCU.

  • 2011 – Playing in his first tournament game at Notre Dame after transferring from Purdue, Scott Martin has one assist in a 71-57 second round loss to Florida State.

  • 2011 – Zack Novak scores 12 points and grabs five rebounds for Michigan in a 73-71 loss to Duke in the second round.

  • 2014 – Branden Dawson falls just shy of a double-double in Michigan State’s 93-78 opening round win over Delaware. The former Lew Wallace Hornet scored 10 points, grabbed eight boards and also had four assists and two steals.

  • 2014 – In an opening round Michigan rout of Wofford, Glenn Robinson III scores 14 points, collects seven rebounds, has an assist and a steal while Spike Albrecht tallies one assist as the Wolverine win 57-40.

  • 2015 – Michigan State’s Branden Dawson tallies 14 points, six rebounds, one assist, one steal and two blocks in a 70-63 opening round win over Georgia.

MARCH 21

  • 1991 – Matt Nover records three rebounds and blocks a shot in IU’s 83-65 loss to Kansas in the regional semi-final

  • 1993 – IU’s Matt Nover scores six points, grabs eight rebounds and blocks a shot as the Hoosiers defeat Xavier 73-70 in the second round.

  • 2003 – Purdue’s Brett Buscher scores seven points and hauls in six boards in an 80-56 win over LSU.

  • 2004 – In a 89-74 loss to Xavier in the second round, Mississippi State’s Shane Power scores 16 points, collects three rebounds and has two assists and two steals.

  • 2009 – E’Twaun Moore puts up 14 points, three rebounds, six assists and a block as Purdue defeats Washington 76-74 in the second round. Robbie Hummel scores seven points, grabs eight rebounds, has three assists, two steals and a block in the same game.

  • 2009 – Zack Novak scores three points and collects four rebounds as Michigan loses to Oklahoma 73-63 in the second round.

  • 2010 – E’Twaun Moore helps lead Purdue past Texas A&M in the second round by scoring 15 points to go along with six rebounds, one assist and three steals.

  • 2013 – In a 71-56 Michigan win over San Diego State, Glenn Robinson III scores 21 points and grabs six rebounds, while Mitch McGary scores 13 points, brings in nine rebounds and blocks a shot, and Spike Albrecht tallies one rebound and one assist.

  • 2013 – Branden Dawson makes his NCAA tournament debut, scoring seven points, grabbing six rebounds, and dishing out three assists in a 65-54 Michigan State win over Valpo in the opening round.

MARCH 22

  • 1975 – Pete Trgovich helps UCLA advance to the Final Four by scoring eight points to go along with four rebounds, five assists, and two steals in an 89-75 win over Arizona State.

  • 1975 – Louisville’s Junior Bridgeman puts up 13 points, grabs three rebounds, dishes out four assists and has four steals as the Cardinals defeat Maryland 96-82 to advance to the Final Four.

  • 1984 – Dan Dakich not only scores four points, grabs three rebounds and dishes out three assists in a regional semi-final win over North Carolina, he plays stellar defense on Michael Jordan, holding him to just 13 points in what would be Jordan’s final game at UNC. 

  • 2008 – Luke Harangody scores 10 points and hauls in an amazing 22 rebounds, but Notre Dame falls to Washington State 61-41 in the second round.

  • 2008 – E’Twaun Moore puts up 15 points along with five rebounds, one assist, one steal and one block while Robbie Hummel scores seven points and grabs nine boards and Scott Martin scores six points along with six rebounds in Purdue’s 85-78 loss to Xavier in the second round. 

  • 2014 – In Michigan’s 79-65 second round win over Texas, Glenn Robinson III scores 14 points to go along with five rebounds and two steals while Spike Albrecht scores five points and grabs three rebounds.

  • 2014 – Michigan State’s Branden Dawson has the highest scoring tournament game of his career as he puts up 26 points and also grabs nine rebounds as the Spartans defeat Harvard 80-73 in second round action.

  • 2015 – Branden Dawson falls just shy of a double-double, scoring 15 points and collecting nine rebounds while also block four shots as Michigan State beats Virginia in the second round, 60-54. 

MARCH 23

  • 1974 – Tim Stoddard scores nine points, hauls in nine rebounds, dishes out five assists and has three steals in North Carolina State’s 80-77 win over UCLA in the Final Four.

  • 1989 – Arizona’s Kenny Lofton scores eight points, grabs two boards and has six assists in a narrow 68-67 loss to UNLV in the regional semi-final.

  • 2000 – Carson Cunningham scores 14 points, has three rebounds and three assists as Purdue defeats Gonzaga 75-66 in the regional semi-final.

  • 2003 – Purdue’s Brett Buscher scores eight points in the Boilermakers’ 77-67 loss to Texas in the second round.

  • 2013 – In a 78-53 second round Michigan win over VCU, Mitch McGary puts up a double-double by scoring 21 points to go along with 14 rebounds. Glenn Robinson III adds 14 points, nine boards, two assists and two steals, while Spike Albrecht contributes three points, one rebound and two assists.

  • 2013 – Branden Dawson scores one point, collects six rebounds, dishes out four assists, has two steals and blocks one shot as Michigan State defeats Memphis 70-48 in the second roun.d

  • 2017 – Spike Albrecht plays in his final NCAA tournament game, picking up one rebound and one assist as Purdue falls to Kansas 98-66 in the regional semi-final.

MARCH 24

  • 1984 – IU’s Dan Dakich scores four points and adds one rebound and three assists in a 50-48 loss to Virginia in the regional final. It’s the final tournament game of Dakich’s career.

  • 1994 – Glenn Robinson scores 44 points to go along with seven rebounds, two assists, three steals and a block in Purdue’s 83-78 win over Kansas in the regional semi-final. However, Robinson strains his back in the game which will limit him in the next round.

  • 2017 – Tyler Wideman scores two points, collects three rebounds and has one assist in Butler’s 92-80 loss to North Carolina in the regional semi-finals.

MARCH 25

  • 1974 – Tim Stoddard scores eight points, grabs seven rebounds, has two assists and three steals as North Carolina State wins the national championship with a 76-64 victory over Marquette.

  • 1984 – Houston’s Renaldo Thomas plays but doesn’t record any stats in a 68-63 win over Wake Forest in the regional final.

  • 1988 – Arizona’s Kenny Lofton scores six points and adds one assist and three steals in a 99-79 win over Iowa in the regional semi-final.

  • 1993 – Matt Nover scores 15 point and collects eight rebounds for IU as the Hoosiers defeat Louisville 82-69 in the regional semi-final.

  • 2000 – Carson Cunningham scores 13 points, grabs two rebounds and dishes out two assists in his final tournament game – a 64-60 Purdue loss to Wisconsin in the regional finals.

MARCH 26

  • 1992 – Matt Nover scores two points and has one rebound as IU defeats Florida State 85-74 in the regional semi-finals.

  • 1994 – Glenn Robinson plays in his final game at Purdue, scoring 13 points and grabbing 13 rebounds in a regional final loss to Kansas.

  • 2009 – In a 72-60 Purdue loss to UCONN in the regional semi-finals, E’Twaun Moore scores seven points and collects three rebounds, while Robbie Hummel scores 17 points, grabs five rebounds and has three steals.

MARCH 27

  • 1988 – Kenny Lofton picks up an assist and a steal as Arizona beats North Carolina 70-52 in the regional semi-finals.

  • 1993 – IU’s Matt Nover scores nine points, grabs seven boards and dishes out two assists in his final career game – a 83-77 loss to Kansas in the regional finals.

  • 2015 – Branden Dawson scores six points to go along with 11 rebounds, two assists and one block in Michigan State’s 62-58 victory over Oklahoma in the regional semi-final.

MARCH 28

  • 1992 – IU’s Matt Nover has the best tournament game of his career, scoring 16 points and grabbing five rebounds in a 106-79 win over UCLA to advance to the Final Four.

  • 2014 – In a 73-71 Michigan win over Tennessee in the regional semi-finals, Glenn Robinson III scored 13 points to go along with five rebounds, two assists and a steal while Spike Albrecht contributed two points and an assist.

  • 2014 – Branden Dawson has his second straight game of 20 plus points as he scored 24 and grabbed 10 rebounds in a 61-59 Michigan State win over Virginia in the regional semi-finals.

MARCH 29

  • 2013 – Michigan gets past Kansas in the regional semi-finals thanks to a monster game from Mitch McGary, scoring 25 points and hauling in 14 rebounds. Glenn Robinson III added 13 points, eight boards and three steals while Spike Albrecht contributed three points and a rebound.

  • 2013 – Branden Dawson scores four points, collects two rebounds, dishes out two assists and adds a steal and a block as Michigan State loses to Duke 71-61.

  • 2015 – Michigan State advances to the Final Four with a 76-70 win over Louisville as Branden Dawson scores nine points, grabs 11 rebounds and blocks four shots.

MARCH 30

  • 2014 – In his final game at Michigan, Glenn Robinson III scores 14 points, collects four rebounds and has one assist and one steal. Spike Albrecht plays, but doesn’t record any stats as the Wolverines fall to Kentucky 75-72 in the regional final.

  • 2014 – Branden Dawson scores five points and grabs eight rebounds in a 60-54 Michigan State loss to UCONN in the regional final.

MARCH 31

  • 2013 – Spike Albrecht scores seven points and has three steals, while Mitch McGary scores 11 points to go along with nine boards & Glenn Robinson III adds six points, two rebounds and two blocks as Michigan beats Florida 79-59 to advance to the Final Four.
