1989 – The first NFL game coached by an African-American, Art Shell, is deemed victorious, as his Raiders won 14-7 over the Jets.
1997 – Legendary University of North Carolina basketball coach Dean Smith retires.
1997 – The New York Rangers become the first team in NHL history to open a season with four straight ties.
