1951 – Jersey Joe Walcott, at age 37, becomes the oldest fighter to win the world heavyweight title after knocking out Ezzard Charles.
1960 – Major League Baseball adds National League franchises in both Houston and New York.
1962 – Bob Allison and Harmon Killebrew of the Minnesota Twins each hit a grand slam in the first inning of a game.
1970 – Willie Mays becomes the 10th player in MLB history to collect 3,000 career hits.
1975 – The trial of Dave Forbes, the first pro athlete to go on trial for a crime committed during a game, ends in a hung jury. Forbes, a player for the Boston Bruins, was indicted on excessive force charges for his actions against Henry Boucha of the Minnesota North Stars.
1987 – Don Mattingly ties the MLB record by homering in eight straight games.
1999 – Yankees pitcher David Cone throws the 14th perfect game in modern MLB history, beating the Expos 6-0.
2018 – San Antonio trades Kawhi Leonard to the Toronto Raptors in exchange for DeMar DeRozan, Jakob Poeltl, and a first round pick.
