1912 – American athlete Jim Thorpe finishes in the top four of all ten events in the Olympic Decathlon, setting a record with 8,413 points at the Stockholm games.

1969 – Lee May of the Cincinnati Reds hits a combined four home runs in a double-header.

1973 – Nolan Ryan, then with the Angels, throws his second career no-hitter.

1973 – Giants slugger Willie McCovey becomes the 15^th player in MLB history to reach the 400 career home run plateau.

1980 – Johnny Bench sets the record for most home runs as a catcher, hitting his 314^th career homer.
