1934 – Horton Smith wins the first ever Masters, beating Craig Wood by one stroke.
1947 – Holy Cross defeats Oklahoma 58-47 to win the NCAA men’s basketball national championship.
1958 – Sugar Ray Robinson regains the middleweight tile for a record fifth time, beating Carmen Basilio in a 15 round decision.
1961 – In overtime, Cincinnati beats Ohio State 70-65 to win the NCAA men’s basketball tournament. Ohio State’s Jerry Lucas is named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player for the second straight year.
1971 – The Boston Patriots change their name to the New England Patriots.
1972 – UCLA wins their sixth straight NCAA men’s hoops title, beating Florida 81-76. Bill Walton is named Most Outstanding Player.
1972 – Blackhawks forward Bobby Hull becomes the second player in NHL history to score 600 career goals.
1973 – The Philadelphia 76ers set the NBA record for the worst regular season record, finishing the season 9-73.
1982 – Wayne Gretzky scores his 200th point of the season, the first player in NHL history to reach the milestone.
2012 – The Atlanta Hawks beat the Utah Jazz 139-133 in the NBA’s first quadruple overtime game in 15 years.
