1897 – Yale defeats Penn 32-10 in the first ever men’s intercollegiate basketball game.

1954 – LaSalle defeats Bradley 92-76 in the first ever televised NCAA men’s basketball championship game.

1965 – Led by Gail Goodrich’s 42 points, UCLA beats Michigan 91-80 to win the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.

1968 – Dave Bing of the Detroit Pistons becomes the first guard since 1948 to lead the NBA in scoring, averaging 27.1 points per game.

1973 – Roberto Clemente is elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame, just 11 weeks after his death in a plane crash. The usual five year waiting period before election is voided for Clemente.

1976 – Boston’s John Havlicek becomes the first player in NBA history to score 1,000 or more points in a season for 14 straight years.

1988 – Mike Tyson knocks out Tony Tubbs in the second round to retain the world heavyweight title.

1990 – The Lakers retire Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s #33.

2005 – At age 20, LeBron James becomes the youngest player in NBA history to score 50 or more points in a game, putting up 56 against the Raptors.

2006 – Japan defeats Cuba 10-6 in the championship game of the first ever World Baseball Classic.

2020 – After playing for the Patriots for 20 years, Tom Brady signs a contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
