1869 – The Cincinnati Red Stockings are the first pro baseball team after being founded by George Ellard and Harry Wright.

1912 – Legendary pitcher Cy Young retires from baseball, finishing his career with 511 wins.

1962 – Wilt Chamberlain becomes the first player in NBA history to score 4,000 points in a season.

1968 – Bob Beamon sets the world record for indoor long jump at 27’2-3/4”.

1985 – Larry Holmes KOs David Bey in the 10th round to retain the world heavyweight title.

1988 – The NFL’s St. Louis Cardinals move to Phoenix.

1997 – North Carolina’s Dean Smith becomes the NCAA men’s basketball career wins leader, passing Adolph Rupp with career victory #877.

2004 – Toronto’s Alexander Mogilny becomes the second Russian-born hockey player to reach 1,000 career points.

2008 – Georgia Southern’s baseball team sets an NCAA record for any Division by hitting 14 home runs in a win over Columbia. 12 different Georgia Southern players homered in the game.
