1970 – Notre Dame’s Austin Carr sets an NCAA tournament record by scoring 61 points in a 112-82 win over Ohio State.

1974 – The City of New Orleans is granted an NBA franchise.

1979 – Hack Wilson is elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

1986 – Wayne Gretzky breaks his own record by recording his 136th assist of the season.

1996 – Magic Johnson becomes the second player in NBA history to record 10,000 career assists.

2009 – Brazilian wonderkid, Neymar, makes his professional soccer debut at age 17 for Santos. 

2012 – Lionel Messi becomes the first soccer player to score five goals in a Champions League match.

2014 – The US women’s soccer team has their unbeaten streak of 43 games come to an end, falling 1-0 to Sweden.

2016 – Steph Curry becomes the first player in NBA history to hit 300 three-pointers in a season.

2016 – Peyton Manning announces his retirement from the NFL.
