1928 – The Winter Olympics in St. Moritz, Switzerland open.

1970 – The Atlanta Hawks set an NBA record for points in the second half by putting up 97 in the second half in a 155-131 win over San Diego.

1971 – John Believau of the Montreal Canadiens scores his 500th career goal.

1973 – The Philadelphia 76ers lose their 20th game in a row.

1982 – Houston Rockets center Moses Malone sets an NBA record by grabbing 21 offensive rebounds.

1984 – Wayne Gretzky sets an NHL record by scoring his 11th short-handed goal of the season.

1988 – Wayne Gretzky records his NHL record ninth 100 point season.

1990 – In one of the biggest upsets in boxing history, James “Buster” Douglas KOs Mike Tyson in the 10th round to win the world heavyweight title.

1995 – For the first time in NBA history, a single team has one of its players win the slam dunk contest and another win the three-point shooting contest as Miami’s Harold Miner takes the dunk title and Glen Rice wins the shooting competition.

1997 – The Jets hire two time Super Bowl winning coach Bill Parcells.

2000 – Ray Bourque of the Boston Bruins becomes the second defenseman and ninth player in NHL history to record 1,500 career points.
