1949 – Joe DiMaggio signs a new contract with the Yankees, making him the first player in MLB history to earn over $100,000 per season.

1959 – The Chicago White Sox are sold to Bill Veeck for $27 million.

1976 – Darryl Sittler of the Toronto Maple Leafs sets an NHL record for points in a game by scoring six goals to go along with four assists in an 11-4 win over Boston.

1990 – Lisa Leslie of Morningside High School in Inglewood, California scores 101 points in the first half in a game against South Torrance High School. The final score of the game is 102-24 as South Torrance’s coach decides not to bring his team out for the second half.

1991 – Bobby Knight, Larry O’Brien, Tiny Archibald, Dave Cowens, Harry Gallatin, and Larry Fleisher are elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame.

1995 – Joe Mullen of the Pittsburgh Penguins becomes the first American born player in NHL history to record 1,000 career points.

2010 – The New Orleans Saints win the first Super Bowl title in franchise history, defeating the Indianapolis Colts to capture Super Bowl XLIV. Saints quarterback Drew Brees is named MVP. 

2016 – The Denver Broncos beat the Carolina Panthers 24-10 to win Super Bowl L. Denver pass rusher Von Miller is named MVP after forcing two fumbles.

2016 – The University of Minnesota’s Rachel Banham ties an NCAA record by scoring 60 points in a Golden Gophers’s win over Northwestern.

2021 – The Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat the Kanas City Chiefs, 31-9, in what would be Tom Brady’s seventh and final Super Bowl victory.

2022 – LeBron James scores 38 points against the Oklahoma City Thunder, surpassing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for the most career points scored in league history.
