1946 – Nine players from the Spokane baseball team in the Western League die in a bus crash.
1965 – Casey Stengel resigns as manager of the New York Mets.
1968 – Pitcher Hoyt Wilhelm, then with the White Sox, passes Cy Young’s MLB record by making career appearance #907. He would finish his career with 1,070 appearances.
1976 – US swimmer John Naber becomes the first person to break the two minute mark in the 200 meter backstroke, setting the record at the Olympics in Montreal.
1978 – Pete Rose ties the National League record with a 37 game hitting streak.
1983 – George Brett hits a home run against the Yankees that is disallowed because of the amount of pine tar on his bat.
1984 – Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw announces his retirement.
1993 – Mets pitcher Anthony Young sets a record by losing his 27th consecutive decision.
2005 – Lance Armstrong wins his seventh consecutive Tour de France. He would eventually have all of his victories vacated due to using performance-enhancing drugs.
2022 – David Ortiz, Minnie Minoso, Gil Hodges, Jim Kaat, Buck O’Neil, and Bud Fowler are inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
