1914 – After catching a flyball, ending a 3-1 win in 21 innings, Giants outfielder Red Murray is struck by lightning and knocked unconscious.

1941 – Joe DiMaggio goes hitless in a game against Cleveland, ending his 56-game hitting streak.

1974 – Bob Gibson becomes the second pitcher in MLB history to record 3,000 career strikeouts.

1978 – Yankees manager Billy Martin and star player Reggie Jackson get into a fight in the dugout after Jackson refuses to bunt.

1979 – The 50th MLB All-Star Game takes place at the Kingdome in Seattle.
