1901 – Red Sox pitcher Cy Young picks up career win #300.
1921 – Babe Ruth sets the MLB record for career home runs by hitting his 137th homer.
1949 – Major League Baseball owners agree to add warning tracks in front of the outfield fences.
1954 – The MLB Players Association is formed.
1979 – A White Sox promotion goes awry as Disco Demolition Night is held on the South Side. In between games of a doubleheader against the Tigers, Chicago radio DJ Steve Dahl blew up a box of disco records in center field and several thousand fans stormed the field. The second game was not played.
1990 – White Sox pitcher Melido Perez throws a rain-shortened no-hitter against the Yankees, shutting them down for six innings.
1996 – Minnesota Twins great Kirby Puckett is forced to retire after 12 seasons following the loss of vision in one of his eyes.
1998 – France wins the World Cup with a 3-0 victory over Brazil.
2012 – For the first time in Olympic history, every country competing in the games has female athletes representing their country.
2014 – Germany wins the World Cup over Argentina after scoring in extra time. It is the first time that Germany won the title as a united country. West Germany won World Cup championships in 1954, 1974, and 1990.
