1914 – Babe Ruth makes his MLB pitching debut, as the Red Sox defeat the Cleveland Naps 4-3.
1950 – The MLB All-Star Game goes to extra innings for the first time, with the NL winning 4-3 in 14 innings.
1967 – Tony Perez hits a home run in the 15th inning off of Catfish Hunter to give the NL a 2-1 win in the longest MLB All-Star Game ever.
1982 – Italy beats West Germany 3-1 to win the World Cup.
1985 – Nolan Ryan, then with the Astros, becomes the first pitcher in MLB history to record 4,000 career strikeouts.
1995 – University of Maryland QB Scott Milanovich is suspended for eight games by the NCAA after he is caught gambling on college sports.
2012 – The Phoenix Suns trade two-time NBA MVP Steve Nash to the Los Angeles Lakers.
