1950 – Notre Dame’s Leon Hart is taken first in the NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions.
1952 – Minneapolis Lakers big man George Mikan scores 61 points in a 91-81 double overtime win over the Rochester Royals.
1966 – Ted Williams is elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
1970 – Cincinnati’s Tom Van Arsdale and Phoenix’s Dick Van Arsdale are the first brothers to play in the same NBA All-Star game.
1980 – President Jimmy Carter announces that the US will boycott the Olympics in Moscow.
1980 – The Pittsburgh Steelers beat the LA Rams 31-19 to win Super Bowl XIV. Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw is named MVP.
1985 – The San Francisco 49ers win Super Bowl XIX with a 38-16 victory over the Miami Dolphins. Niners QB Joe Montana is named MVP after throwing for a then Super Bowl record 331 yards.
1989 – Pittsburgh Penguins center Mario Lemieux becomes the second player in NHL history to score 50 goals in less than 50 games.
2002 – Detroit’s Steve Yzerman becomes the ninth player in NHL history to record 1,000 career assists.
2007 – Utah Jazz coach Jerry Sloan passes Larry Brown for fourth on the NBA all-time wins list with 1,010 victories.
2019 – Both conference championships are decided in overtime. The Patriots beat the Chiefs, 37-31, and the Rams beat the Saints, 26-23. Both games are arguably still discussed for the same reason – a controversial penalty (or lack thereof).
