1943 – Alex Smart of the Montreal Canadiens becomes the first player in NHL history to record a hat trick in their first career game. Smart accomplished the feat in a 5-1 win over the Blackhawks.
1946 – The Boston Yanks select Notre Dame’s Frank Dancewicz with the first overall pick in the NFL Draft.
1951 – The first official NFL Pro Bowl is held at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Otto Graham is crowned MVP.
1961 – Willard Dewveall of the Bears becomes the first NFL player to leave the league for the AFL.
1968 – Behind an MVP performance from quarterback Bart Starr, the Green Bay Packers beat the John Madden coached Oakland Raiders 33-14 in Super Bowl II.
1973 – The Miami Dolphins beat the Washington Redskins 14-7 to win Super Bowl VII. Dolphins safety Jake Scott is named MVP. With the win, Miami completes what is to date the only undefeated season in NFL history.
1985 – Martina Navratilova becomes the third tennis player to win 100 tournaments.
1987 – Cubs slugger Billy Williams is elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame along with Catfish Hunter.
2020 – The Red Sox fire manager Alex Cora amid MLB’s investigation of sign-stealing by the Houston Astros. Cora was previously the bench coach in Houston.
