1924 – The State of California legalizes professional boxing, which had been illegal since 1914.
1959 – Mr. Cub Ernie Banks is named NL MVP for the second straight season.
1973 – Blackhawks center Stan Mikita notches career point #1,000.
1977 – The Portage Indians football team wins the first sectional title in program history, beating Merrillville 3-0.
1987 – The NBA announces four expansion franchises with new teams coming to Charlotte and Miami beginning in 1988 and Minneapolis and Orlando in 1989.
1994 – The Bulls beat the Hornets 89-83 in the first regular season basketball game at The United Center.
2001 – The Diamondbacks beat the Yankees in game seven to win the franchise’s first, and to date only, World Series title. Pitchers Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling are named co-MVPs.
