1900 – Boston Beaneaters pitcher Kid Nichols records his 300th career victory.

1912 – Jim Thorpe wins the gold medal at the Pentathlon at the Stockholm Olympics. He would later be stripped of the medal after it was discovered he played pro baseball. It would be reinstated in 1982.

1948 – The Cleveland Indians sign 42 year old pitcher Satchel Paige.

1974 – West Germany beats The Netherlands 2-1 to win the World Cup.

1978 – The NBA approves a franchise swap between owners. Buffalo Braves owners John Brown and Harry Mangurian gain control of the Boston Celtics. Irv Levin, who owned the Celtics, gets the Braves and eventually moves them to San Diego to become the Clippers.

1985 – Boris Becker defeats Kevin Curren to win Wimbledon. With the win, Becker becomes the first unseeded player to win the tournament.

1986 – Jackie Joyner-Kersee sets a world record in the heptathlon with 7,148 points at the inaugural Goodwill Games in Moscow.

1998 – The American League defeats the National League 13-8 in the highest scoring All Star Game in MLB history.

2006 – Cleveland Indians first baseman Travis Hafner becomes the first player in MLB history to hit five grand slams before the All Star break.

2019- United States Women’s National team wins record 4th FIFA World Cup
