1902 – John McGraw is hired as manager of the New York Giants, a position he would hold until 1932.

1903 – MLB batting champion Ed Delahanty disappears after being removed from a train by force. He is found dead at the bottom of Niagara Falls two weeks later.

1930 – White Sox outfielder Carl Reynolds becomes the second player in MLB history to hit home runs in three consecutive innings.

1941 – Joe DiMaggio extends his record setting hitting streak to 44 games with a three run homer.

1950 – Cleveland Indians pitcher Bob Feller picks up career victory #200.

1994 – Colombian soccer player Andres Escobar is shot to death 10 days after he accidentally scored a goal against his own team at the World Cup.

1995 – Dodgers pitcher Hideo Nomo is the first Japanese player to be selected to an MLB All Star game.

2008 – A settlement is reached which allows the Seattle SuperSonics to move to Oklahoma City. Team owner Clay Bennett has to pay the city of Seattle $45 million.
