1973 – The Black Sports Hall of Fame is formed with the inaugural class of Paul Robeson, Elgin Baylor, Jesse Owens, Jim Brown, Wilma Rudolph, Joe Louis, and Althea Gibson.

1992 – The US Basketball team known as “The Dream Team” plays in its first exhibition game, a 133-57 win over Cuba.

1993 – Six days after setting the record for most games caught in MLB history, Carlton Fisk is released by the White Sox during a road trip to Cleveland.

1994 – Mets pitcher Dwight Gooden is suspended for 60 days due to drug charges.

1995 – The Golden State Warriors select Maryland forward Joe Smith with the first overall pick in the NBA Draft.

2007 – Craig Biggio of the Houston Astros becomes the 27th player in MLB history to record 3,000 career hits.

2007 – The Portland Trailblazers select Ohio State center, and Indiana native, Greg Oden with the #1 overall pick. Oden would miss his entire rookie year and would only play in parts of three seasons in the NBA. Seattle takes Kevin Durant second. Oops.
