1917 – After Babe Ruth is ejected for throwing a pitch at an umpire, Red Sox pitcher Ernie Shore enters the game and retires all 26 hitters that he faced in a win over the Washington Senators. It is ruled as a combined no-hitter.

1922 – Johnny Weissmuller breaks his own world records in the 300, 400, 440, and 500 meters at a swim meet in Honolulu, Hawaii.

1963 – Jimmy Piersall of the New York Mets circles the bases backwards after hitting his 100th career home run.

1988 – The Charlotte Hornets and the Miami Heat conduct their expansion draft. The Heat select Arvid Kramer from the Dallas Mavericks with the first pick. He never plays for the team. Other notable selections include Dell Curry and Muggsy Bogues.

1996 – Michael Johnson breaks the world record in the 200 meter sprint, finishing in 19.66 seconds.

2003 – Barry Bonds becomes the first player in MLB history to have 500 career home runs and 500 career steals.

2005 – The San Antonio Spurs beat the Detroit Pistons in game seven to win the NBA title.

2011 – The Cleveland Cavaliers draft Duke guard Kyrie Irving with the first overall pick in the NBA Draft.
