1932 – German boxer Max Schmeling loses the NYSAC, NBA and lineal heavyweight boxing titles in a controversial split points decision to American Jack Sharkey.
1939 – The Yankees announce Lou Gehrig’s retirement after he is diagnosed with ALS.
1960 – Armin Hary of West Germany becomes the first man to run 100 meters in 10.0 seconds at a meet in Zurich, Switzerland.
1964 – Phillies pitcher Jim Bunning throws a perfect game against the Mets.
1965 – Gary Player becomes the third golfer to win all four major titles.
1970 – Brazil wins the World Cup for the third time, beating Italy 4-1 in the final. They are the first country to win that many times.
1971 – Ken “Hawk” Harrelson retires from baseball to play pro golf.
1988 – The Lakers beat the Pistons in game seven to win the NBA title.
1991 – Denis Potvin and Mike Bossy are elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame.
1997 – The New York Liberty beat the Los Angeles Sparks 67-57 in the first ever WNBA game.
1997 – The Merrillville Pirates win the softball state championship, defeating Carmel 1-0 in the title game.
2003 – Lennox Lewis retains his heavyweight boxing title in a bout against Vitali Klitschko. All three ringside judges had Klitschko winning the fight after six rounds, but a cut over Klitschko’s eye caused the ring doctor to have the fight stopped.
2012 – The Miami Heat beat the Oklahoma City Thunder in game five to win the NBA championship.
