1952 – Jersey Joe Walcott defeats Ezzard Charles in 15 rounds to win the heavyweight boxing titles. It’s the first sporting event televised nationally.

1955 – Mickey Mantle hits career home run #550.

1963 – The NHL holds its first ever amateur draft.

1967 – The NHL announces six new franchises in Minnesota, Oakland, Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, St. Louis.

1977 – The Portland Trailblazers win the NBA title, beating the 76ers in six games.

1981 – Nolan Ryan, then with the Astros, passes Early Wynn for the most walks issued by a pitcher with 1,777.

2016 – Novak Djokovic becomes the first tennis player in nearly 50 years to win four consecutive major championships.
