1904 – Dennis McGann of the New York Giants sets an MLB record with five stolen bases in one game.

1968 – “Papa Bear” George Halas retires from coaching, finishing his career with 318 wins and six NFL titles.

1968 – Major League Baseball announces that they will add franchises in San Diego and Montreal.

1975 – The Philadelphia Flyers win their second straight Stanley Cup, defeating the Buffalo Sabres in six games.

1981 – Jockey Willie Shoemaker wins his 8,000th career race.

1982 – The Colorado Rockies of the NHL move to New Jersey and are renamed the Devils.

1984 – Rick Mears wins the Indianapolis 500 by the largest margin since 1967, beating Roberto Guerrero and Al Unser by two laps.

1987 – Yankees pitcher Phil Niekro is the third pitcher in MLB history to record 700 career starts.

2014 – The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wins the Division III World Series 7-0 over Emory University. With the title, Wisconsin-Whitewater becomes the first school in NCAA history to win championships in baseball, football, and men’s basketball in the same school year.
