1935 – Jesse Owens either ties or breaks four word records in a 45 minute span during a Big Ten meet in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

1951 – Willie Mays goes 0-5 in his first MLB game.

1965 – Muhammad Ali knocks out Sonny Liston a minute into the first round in their heavyweight title rematch. It’s listed as the fastest knockout in a heavyweight title bout.

1970 – The Indiana Pacers win the ABA title, defeating the LA Stars in six games.

1975 – The Golden State Warriors complete a sweep of the Washington Bullets to win the NBA title.

1978 – The Montreal Canadiens win their third straight Stanley Cup, beating the Bruins in five games.

1981 – Carl Yastrzemski becomes the fourth player in MLB history to play in 3,000 career games.

1982 – Fergie Jenkins records the 3,000th strikeout of his career. He’s just the seventh pitcher to reach that mark.

1984 – The Boston Red Sox trade Dennis Eckersley to the Cubs for Bill Buckner.

2017 – LeBron James passes Michael Jordan to become the NBA’s all-time leading playoff scorer with 5,995 points. It was James’ 212th postseason game. Jordan played in 179.
