1959 – Yankees catcher Yogi Berra’s errorless game streak ends at 148 games.

1968 – The Montreal Canadiens win the Stanley Cup, completing a sweep of the St. Louis Blues.

1972 – The Giants trade Willie Mays to the Mets for pitcher Charlie Williams and cash.

1977 – Mired in a 16 game losing streak, Atlanta Braves owner Ted Turner sends manager Dave Bristol on a “scouting trip” and names himself interim manager. Turner manages one game (a loss to the Pirates) before National League president Chub Fenney pulled the plug on the stunt.

1980 – Pete Rose, then playing for the Phillies, steals second, third, and home in one inning.


1985 – 56 people are killed and over 200 more are injured in a fire at Bradford City football ground in England.

1992 – The Portland TrailBlazers win the highest scoring game in NBA postseason history, a 153-151 double overtime victory over the Phoenix Suns.

1996 – Al Leiter throws the first no-hitter in Florida Marlins history.

2003 – Rafael Palmeiro, then with the Texas Rangers, becomes the 19th player in MLB history to hit 500 career home runs.

2015 – The NFL announces that Tom Brady will be suspended for the first four games of the season due to the “Deflate Gate” controversy.
