1945 – Pete Gray, who only has one arm, plays outfield for the St. Louis Browns. He goes 1-4 at the plate.

1959 – The Montreal Canadiens win their fourth consecutive Stanley Cup with a 5-3 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs.

1962 – The Boston Celtics win their fourth straight NBA title thanks to Bill Russell’s 30 point and 40 rebound game in an overtime victory over the Lakers.

1966 – Bill Russell is hired as head coach of the Boston Celtics, making him the first African-American coach in NBA history.

1977 – Future Hall of Famer Eddie Murray hits his first career home run.

1987 – Mike Schmidt of the Phillies hits career home run #500.

1991 – John Stockton of the Utah Jazz breaks his own record for assists in a season with 1,136.

1995 – Legendary quarterback Joe Montana announces his retirement from the NFL.

1998 – The Indianapolis Colts select Peyton Manning with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

1999 – Wayne Gretzky plays in his final NHL game, recording an assist in the Rangers loss to the Penguins. Prior to the game, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman announces that the league is retiring jersey #99.

2001 – AC Green plays in his 1,192nd consecutive NBA game, which is still the record to this day.

2007 – White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle throws a no-hitter against the Texas Rangers. Buehrle faced the minimum 27 batters in the game, as he walked Sammy Sosa in the fifth and then picked him off first base.

2008 – NBA owners give approval for a potential relocation of the Seattle SuperSonics to Oklahoma City.
