THIS DAY IN SPORTS HISTORY: 3/23

1946 – Oklahoma State wins their second straight NCAA men’s basketball national championship, beating North Carolina 43-40 in the title game.

1948 – Kentucky wins their first NCAA men’s basketball title, defeating Baylor 58-42.

1957 – North Carolina beats Kansas 54-53 in three overtimes to win the NCAA men’s basketball tournament. Kansas’ Wilt Chamberlain is named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player despite not playing for the winning team.

1963 – Loyola of Chicago wins the 25th NCAA men’s basketball tournament, defeating Cincinnati 60-58 in overtime.

1968 – UCLA wins their second straight NCAA men’s hoops championship, beating North Carolina 78-55.

1974 – NC State ends UCLA’s streak of seven consecutive NCAA men’s basketball national championships, defeating the Bruins 80-77 in double overtime in the semi-final round of the tournament. 

1991 – The World League of American Football debuts with London beating Frankfurt 24-11.

1994 – Wayne Gretzky becomes the NHL’s all-time leading scorer with 802 career goals.

2002 – Detroit Red Wing forward Brendan Shanahan scores his 500th career goal.

2002 – Iowa State’s Cael Sanderson becomes the first undefeated four time NCAA wrestling champion, beating Lehigh’s Jon Trenge 12-4 to win the 197 pound title. With the win, Sanderson finishes his career with a 159-0 record.

2007 – Kobe Bryant becomes the second player in NBA history to score 50 or more points in four straight games.

2010 – The NFL changes its overtime rules for playoff games so that each team has an opportunity to get the ball.
