THIS DAY IN SPORTS HISTORY: 3/17

1897 – For the first time, a boxing match is photographed by a motion picture camera as Bob Fitzsimmons knocks out Jim Corbett in the 14th round to win the world heavyweight title.

1908 – Tommy Burns knocks out Jene Roche in 80 seconds to retain the world heavyweight title.

1939 – In the first-ever NCAA men’s basketball tournament game, Villanova beats Brown 42-30.

1940 – For the first time in NHL history, the three members of one line finish first, second, and third in league scoring as Boston’s Milt Schmidt, Woody Dumart, and Bobby Bauer dominate the NHL.

1963 – Legendary Celtics guard Bob Cousy plays in his final NBA game. 

2001 – In a 101-29 win over Long Island University in the first round of the NCAA women’s basketball tournament, UCONN sets the record for fewest points given up in a tournament game.

2018 – The UCONN women’s basketball team sets NCAA records for most points in a game (140), points in a period (55), and points in a half (94) in a rout of St. Francis in the opening round of the tournament.
