1930 – The Yankees sign Babe Ruth to a two year contract for $160,000. Yankees GM Ed Barrow states “No one will ever be paid more than Ruth.” He was wrong.

1941 – Hugh Mulcahy of the Phillies becomes the first baseball player drafted into World War II.

1954 – The Milwaukee Hawks beat the Baltimore Bullets in both games in the only doubleheader in NBA history involving the same two teams.

1966 – Casey Stengel is elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

1971 – Joe Frazier wins the world heavyweight title with a unanimous decision over Muhammad Ali.

2010 – The UCONN women’s basketball team sets an NCAA women’s hoops record by winning their 71st straight game.

2013 – The Big East Conference announces that DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Providence, St. John’s, Seton Hall, and Villanova are departing the conference.

2014 – Creighton’s Doug McDermott becomes the eighth player in NCAA men’s basketball history to score 3,000 career points.
