1940 — W2XBS in New York broadcasts the first American hockey game, allowing viewers to watch the Rangers take on the Montreal Canadiens at Madison Square Garden.

1963 – The US Supreme Court rules that professional football is subject to anti-trust laws, unlike pro baseball. In a 6-3 decision, the court decided that baseball is the only anti-trust-exempt sport.

1961 – St. Bonaventure men’s basketball team’s 99-game winning streak comes to an end with an 87-77 loss to Niagara.

1964 — Cassius Clay, later known as Muhammad Ali, wins the world heavyweight title with a win over Sonny Liston in Miami.

1977 — Pete Maravich of the New Orleans Jazz sets an NBA record for a guard by scoring 68 points. At the time, only Wilt Chamberlain and Elgin Baylor had scored more in a single game.

1987 — The Southern Methodist football team is suspended for the 1987 season after investigations reveal that players received money from boosters.

1991 – A group of investors including Wayne Gretzky and comedian John Candy, buy the CFL’s Toronto Argonauts.

1994 – Former Yankees shortstop Phil Rizzuto is elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

2010 – At the Vancouver Olympics, the Canadian women’s hockey team wins their third straight gold medal, defeating the US 2-0.

2019 – Houston Rockets guard James Harden has his streak of scoring 30+ points in 32 consecutive games come to an end as he scores 28 in a Houston win over Atlanta. The streak was the second longest in NBA history.
