1930 – The Boston Bruins become the first team in NHL history to score 100 goals in a season.

1954 – The NBA All-Star Game goes to overtime for the first time in history, with the East beating the West 98-93.

1958 – St. Louis Hawks forward Bob Pettit becomes the first player to win the MVP of the NBA All-Star Game while playing for the losing team. Pettit scored 28 points to go along with 26 rebounds.

1978 – Boxer Roberto Duran becomes the undisputed world lightweight champion after defeating Esteban De Jesus to win the WBC title. Duran also held the WBA championship.

1979 – Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw is named MVP as Pittsburgh defeats Dallas 35-31 in Super Bowl XIII.

1990 – John McEnroe becomes the first player to ever be expelled from the Australian Open.

1992 – The Steelers hire Bill Cowher as the team’s new head coach. Cowher replaces Chuck Knoll who held the position since 1970.

2004 – The Minnesota Wild set an NHL record for the two fastest goals. In the final 15 seconds of a game tied at two against the Blackhawks, Minnesota scored a pair of goals just three seconds apart.

2007 – The Bears beat the Saints 39-14 to win the NFC Championship, sending the team to the Super Bowl for the first time since 1986.

2010 – At 31 years and 151 days old, Lakers guard Kobe Bryant becomes the youngest player in NBA history to reach the 25,000 career point mark.

2019 – Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson sets an NBA record by making his first 10 three-point attempts in a 130-111 win over the Lakers. Thompson scored 44 points in the game
